Ecólogo interesado en entender como la variabilidad ambiental modula las relaciones entre los organismos y contribuye a definir los grandes patrones de distribución, abundancia y diversidad de las especies. El foco de su investigación son las comunidades  de algas e invertebrados que habitan la zona intermareal de las zonas de surgencia alrededor del mundo. Este interés se ha traducido en una colaboración interdisciplinaria con el fin de entender como los grandes cambios ambientales del Holoceno, simultaneos a la llegada del humano al sur de América, han contribuido a definir la estructura trófica y funcional de los ecosistemas costeros de la zona norte del país. En paralelo mantiene otras colaboraciones enfocadas en entender como diferentes patrones de variabilidad ambiental impactan la estabilidad ecológica y los procesos evolutivos en ambientes costeros.

La investigación científica fundamental se complementa con una iniciativa interdisciplinaria, el Núcleo Milenio Center for the Study of Multiple Drivers on Marine Socio-Ecological Systems (MUSELS 2014-2019), donde es Director Alterno. Este centro pretende desarrollar las bases científicas necesarias para expandir de forma sustentable la acuicultura de moluscos, lo que ha requerido comprender el sistema socio-ecológico de la acuicultura, desde la disponibilidad de información oceanográfica relevante, hasta la enseñanza Técnico-Profesional de la disciplina en el país. De esta manera, los conocimientos generados a través de la investigación básica se traducen en múltiples iniciativas de impacto social y económico.

Sus principales proyectos de investigación son a través de FONDECYT, destacando el proyecto regular #1181300 (Multiple stressors and the functional diversity of coastal ecosystems, 2018-2021), donde actúa como investigador principal, y los proyectos regulares #1190529 (Disturbed and Unstable? Functional Impacts of the Extinction of Dominant, Habitat-Forming Species on Coastal Marine Communities, 2019-2022)  y #1190710 (Speciation genomics in marine organisms: Scurria Limpets as a novel model system to study the evolution of genomic divergence, 2019-2022), donde actúa como co-investigador.
